my story

I started woodturning in my dad’s garage woodshop at age fourteen and was instantly hooked to the process of shaping raw material into useful objects. I studied architecture at University of Texas in Austin, where I was educated in principals of design and from there moved to NYC where I work as a licensed architect. In NYC, I found that I missed working with my hands but shop space comes at a premium in the city. Out of desperation, I began tinkering with the far-flung idea of a fold-up lathe cabinet that could sit outside on my fire escape. Five years and a move to Brooklyn later, I managed to turn my design into reality. Finally, I was able to again spend my spare time designing & turning wooden objects by hand on my own Brooklyn balcony in the sun.

Sunlathe was born.
